Business and Clinical Motivators Workgroup Meeting Materials - 5-26-15

Dr. Jerry Osheroff Principal, TMIT Consulting and Greg Paulson, Deputy Director, Trenton Health Team are working to apply a nationally recognized, technology agnostic approach for implementing and managing clinical decision support (CDS) for quality improvement at Trenton Health Team. Importantly, this approach focuses on the use of tools for evaluating existing workflows and processes and identifying areas of improvement to support the effective use of CDS. This meeting of the Business & Clinical Motivators Workgroup features an interactive discussion with Dr. Osheroff and Mr. Paulson about what organizations can do to get the greatest value from their clinical decision support technology.

This workgroup will provide an opportunity to hear from Madeleine Konig, Senior Policy Analyst with the American Heart Association. Madeleine will review the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s initiatives that use health information and electronic tools to inform consumers and providers in order to improve quality of care and support collaborative care. Some programs included in the discussion will be My Life Check, Heart 360, the Patient Support Network, Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) and The Guideline Advantage. At the conclusion of the presentation, we will discuss the workgroup charter and timeline to develop a toolkit to include best practices among the stakeholders, and resources to assist patient-consumers and healthcare providers in effective ways to integrate health IT into daily workflow.

The Business & Clinical Motivators Workgroup heard from two presenters: Leslie Kelly Hall, Senior Vice President, Policy, Healthwise, who spoke about business case for patient engagement and the business drivers that work in the current reimbursement models. Our second speaker was Vera Rulon, MS, RHIT, AHIMA Fellow, FACMI, Director, External Medical Communications, Pfizer Medical, who provided an overview of medication management, including Pharma's perspective on looking “Beyond the Pill” and examples of Pfizer's initiatives in utilizing technology to help patients manage their health.

Greater Houston HealthConnect and the Triple Aim

Nick Bonvino, CEO of the Greater Houston HealthConnect addresses the Business and Clinical Motivators workgroup on their efforts in Texas. GHH came online in 2012 and achieved sustainability in 2015 working to encourage the furthering of the Triple Aim. Aside from connecting health systems and hospitals, GHH also supports the county jail system, a unique set of challenges. Mr. Bonvino also elaborated on their highly successful ETHAN ambulance connectivity platform integrating EMS run sheets into EMRs.
