Washington, DC – July 13, 2022 - Today, LexisNexis® Risk Solutions and Executives for Health Innovation (EHI) released the report, Tackling Cybersecurity Threats Without Sacrificing Usability. The report contains insights from an Executive Roundtable panel comprised of cybersecurity experts from LexisNexis Risk Solutions; Marshfield Clinic Health System; Mayo Clinic; Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC); and Providence Health. The report presents shared solutions being developed, innovative plans being implemented, and best practices created to mitigate against cyber-attacks while also retaining optimal user experience.
“Hospitals and health systems are an increasingly attractive target to bad actors,” said Josh Schoeller, CEO of the Health Care business at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “This new reality of an inevitable cyber-attack requires cybersecurity teams across the healthcare industry to adopt innovative defensive plans to protect patients' lives and secure health data without creating unintended barriers to quality care. We must foster collaboration to share solutions and lessons learned to ensure system security and patient safety.”
Through the COVID-19 pandemic, cybersecurity threats to hospital systems rose 123% and ransomware, more specifically, affected more than 18 million patient records nationwide – a 470% increase from 2019. In 2020 alone, hackers pulled in more than $2.1 million in ransom. ECRI named cybersecurity attacks as the top health technology hazard to patient safety for 2022. The risk to patient lives has never been higher.
“The rise of cyber-attacks inside the healthcare industry has forced cybersecurity experts to fight a never-ending battle,” said Jen Covich Bordenick, CEO of Executives for Health Innovation. “To ensure a health system’s security, while simultaneously protecting patients and their data, the healthcare industry must communicate. We must openly share our experiences, disseminate and implement best practices, and learn from other industries. It’s paramount that we work together. Without continuous collaboration, patient lives are at risk.”
