Mil Familias
Mil Familias
Mil Familias is an initiative of Sansum Diabetes Research Institute based in Santa Barbara, California. Launched in 2017 this ambitious and unique project aims to recruit at least 1000 US Latino families from the Central Coast of California where at least one family member is living with diabetes. By upskilling community health workers from the Latino community and training them in type 2 diabetes, clinical research and care access, each family member is providing data on the 5 determinants of human health - genetics, biology, behavior, psychology and the environment. Data are collected using physical exams, blood tests, validated questionnaires and wearable technologies. Once the cohort has been established and the big dataset created the aim is to initiate novel interventions to remove the existing disproportionate and discriminatory burden of diabetes and cardiovascular disease currently affecting US Latino families and to increase the participation of this large and growing minority in clinical research.
