According to a new data brief released by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, in 2018 and 2019, half of all hospitals reported a lack of capacity to electronically exchange information with public health agencies. While certainly an important issue before, as COVID-19 began to spread across the country in 2020, this lack of fast and standardized information exchange resulted in delayed test results, diminished disease surveillance capabilities, and decreased response times.
