This week eHI members from around the country gathered for the 2016 eHI Annual Conference . The meeting kicked off with a fireside chat with eHI CEO, Jennifer Covich Bordenick and Karen DeSalvo, MD, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, ONC, and Acting Assistant Secretary for Health at HHS. She addressed a full house in the Alfred Nobel room of the House of Sweden. Interoperability was the hot button issue of the morning with Dr. DeSalvo emphasizing the importance of standardization in the healthcare marketplace. Following, Sam Ho, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare and Chip Kahn, President of the Federation of American Hospitals spoke on the Rise of Alternative Payment Models. Interoperability took center stage for the final panel in the morning session with C-suite executives from HL7, the Sequoia Project, and CommonWell, moderated by InterSystems. Mayo Clinic CIO, Cris Ross, spoke briefly on how Mayo successfully engages patients in their ongoing effort to improve outcomes.

One of the liveliest sessions took place in the afternoon with a debate regarding the effects of the 2016 election on the healthcare space. Bruce Mehlman and Dave Thomas from Mehlman, Castaghetti, Rosen & Thomas walked through ten questions for the election season including “will Trump supporters amount to Trump voters?” and “Can Marco Rubio unite the GOP establishment?” eHI CEO, Jen Covich, moderated a panel in the afternoon on breaking the glass ceiling in HIT with women in C-suite positions. The last two panels of the day addressed the precision medicine initiative and the current status of the winners from the August iThrive Challenge.
