Breaches Up 15 Percent in First Half of 2016

There have been nearly five billion private records exposed globally since 2013. In 2016, those breaches have risen 15 percent in the first half of the year as compared to the previous six months according to data security firm Gemalto in their new Breach Level Index. The United States is the most popular target with almost 2.5 billion records stolen since 2013. Healthcare is still only just over five percent of the breaches, according to the report.

Fitness Trackers May Actually Increase Weight

In a recent study published in JAMA, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that wearable fitness trackers may actually make users gain weight. According to a two-year study, users actually gained more weight on average, opposed to those that used traditional weight-loss methods. Researchers recruited 471 adults between the ages of 18 and 35, with an average weight of 210 pounds. The study was multi-part and found that initially everyone lost weight, but those using traditional methods were 13 pounds lighter after 24 months. This study contradicts earlier studies that were smaller and shorter.

Intel Joins Forces with The Michael J. Fox Foundation to Combat Parkinson’s

Last week, eHI member Intel released a white paper with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, summarizing their joint work on the project. The collaboration uses wearables, Intel proprietary algorithms, and big data analytics. Wearables take the form of inertial measurement units that measure velocity, orientation, and gravitational forces. The trial employs “off-the-shelf” wristwatches that link to a mobile application.
