Telemedicine Facilitates Better Family Participation in Surgical ICU Rounds

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine found through interviews with families involved with a patient’s care that their involvement with physicians’ ICU rounds are not consistent. For a majority, families want to participate in rounds, which can aide in and strengthen patient care. The study reported some hurdles, making this process more difficult, including travel, work obligations and the rounding schedules, according to the study in the American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC). One answer: telemedicine tools, allowing greater ease for interaction. “Virtual participation in ICU rounds would not replace a family member’s presence at the bedside but could offer a supplemental way to improve communication between clinicians and families,” co-author Daniel Holena, MD, said in an announcement concurring with the study’s findings. “The future of using telemedicine for virtual family participation in rounds will depend on user-friendly and reliable platforms.”

Four Principles That May Make Healthcare Easier for Patient to Use

The vast and complex healthcare system in this county brings difficulties, but options for ease of services do exist. Many factors contribute to this complex system, explains futurist, Ian Morrison, in Hospitals & Health Networks, including aging patients, treatment for multiple conditions, at times concurrently, causing greater complications with treatment; finally, multiple payment methods and payers work in a very complex system for coverage. “American healthcare may be the most complex, technologically advanced and administratively intricate of any health system in the world,” Morrison writes. Other areas of note include an increasing focus on population health for both providers and payers and disconnected and nontransparent understanding among consumers about healthcare and insurance costs. Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), with their continued growth, also have health providers looking into new organizational structures, and the use of such programs has been questioned. Morrison does point to a feasible resolution: simplicity. He looks at Kaiser Permanente as an example model, which has a system offering both care and insurance, but with a simple business model. The result? Fewer unnecessary hospital visits, lowering the astounding costs of care and utilizing telehealth to treat patients.

Commission on Care, Lawmakers Want Commercial EHR for VA

The leaders of the Commission on Care has offered recommendations to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) delivery of healthcare, telling a House committee that the VA should abandon its current electronic health record system (EHR) and adopt a commercial solution. Dr. Toby Cosgrove, Vice Chairperson of the Commission and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, stated that VistA is too decentralized and not well-managed or well-maintained.

Cybersecurity Issues Have Healthcare Executives on High Alert, HIMSS Survey Says

With cybercriminals continuing to infiltrate the healthcare industry, most health executives are strengthening their data security and making it a priority, according to the2016 HIMSS Cybersecurity Survey. Eighty-five percent of the 150 surveyed in the report show that IT security leaders are increasing cybersecurity awareness, with growing concern over potential phishing attacks (80 percent of acute care providers, 65 percent non-acute); viruses or malware (68 percent acute, 65 percent non-acute); and risk assessment results (64 percent acute, 77 percent non-acute). More effective cybersecurity practices doe come with a cost. About 71 percent of non-acute care and 50 percent of acute care respondents were worried about a lack of financial resources, while about 60 percent of respondents showed concern over a lack or shortage of cybersecurity personnel. "Cybersecurity attacks have the potential to yield disastrous results for healthcare providers and society as a whole," said Rod Piechowski, HIMSS' Senior Director, Health Information Systems, in a statement. "It's imperative healthcare providers acknowledge the need to address cybersecurity concerns and act accordingly. Fortunately, the evidence from this study suggests providers are taking steps to address cybersecurity concerns. However, more progress needs to be made so that providers can truly stay ahead of the threats."
