Link Between Readmission and Care Quality Investigated - Johns Hopkins

 
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University studied three years of public hospital data obtained from CMS, and compared readmission rates with mortality rates for six conditions: heart attack, pneumonia, heart failure, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and coronary artery bypass. Researchers found hospitals with readmission rates had better mortality rates for COPD, stroke, and heart failure.  

 
Mobile Devices and Internet Encouraging Healthy Behaviors

 
According to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, mobile devices and internet access assist in driving heart-healthy behaviors. The study evaluated 224 research projects between 1990 and 2013. According to the authors, many of the mHealth and internet interventions lasted less than six months. Lead study author, Ashkan Afshin, from the University of Washington does indicate gaps in the research, especially pertaining to long-term value and effectiveness.

 
Digital Health Poses Challenges for Cardiology, But Opportunities Abound

 
In the journal, JAMA Cardiology, authors from Stanford University found that the proliferation of smartphone applications, remote monitoring, and reimbursement for telehealth among the promising changes in years past . The challenges identified include the ability to make data collected useful, usefulness of mobile applications as stand-alone products, and validation of usefulness and incentives. They mention that the healthcare community is coming together to work through these issues.

Cerner Joins Forces with 3M for Population Health

 
EHR vendor and eHI member, Cerner, along with 3M Health Information Systems, announced a new partnership to improve population health management. In a press release, 3M and Cerner will use their Patient-Focused Episodes Software and HealtheIntent to allow users access to comprehensive overviews of patient data, care information, and cost/resource analyses. 3M’s software will allow HealtheIntent to aggregate patient data across care sites and care management in an overview of the patient’s condition. This allows providers to target specific courses of action. Cerner hopes that by using this approach they can improve user focus on patient-centered healthcare.
New Jersey Made Faulty Medicaid EHR Incentive Payments - Report

 
A report from the Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) revealed that the New Jersey Department of Human Services made incorrect Medicaid EHR incentives payments to 15 hospitals in the state. The state erroneously paid $2.5 million, according to the auditors. Ten of the hospitals were overpaid, while five hospitals were underpaid. In addition, New Jersey made incorrect payments to two other hospitals, which the agency corrected after the audit period. “The incorrect payment errors occurred because the state agency’s program integrity contractor failed to identify certain errors and inconsistently applied this new program’s complex requirements,” according to the OIG report.
DoD Announces Delay of EHR Modernization

 
In a recent announcement, the US Department of Defense (DoD) released that they are pushing back its $4.3 billion EHR modernization efforts with Cerner for at least a few months. The program officer, Stacy Cummings, revealed in a statement that during system testing, they found that additional time is needed before the initial rollout, to ensure the best possible user experiences to the beneficiaries and providers. DoD indicated that they will release additional specifics regarding the delay within 30 days.



CMS Sets Aside $63 Million in ACA Navigator Grants

 

This week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a budget of $63 million to assist organizations in providing in-person assistance to healthcare exchange customers this November. These awards are the second round of funding in a three-year funding cycle for CMS to assist those trained to assist consumers navigate the marketplace. Ninety-six returning and two new organizations received grants, to be released in 12-month increments, based on performance assessments.

Sibley Innovation Hub Presents at eHI Value Based Care Roundtable

 

This week, eHI and Philips North America hosted an executive roundtable focusing on value based care, entitled Value-Based Partnership for a Healthier Society: What’s Working and Why? Executives from around the country gathered at the headquarters of eHI member, CAQH, and heard success stories of groups implanting value based care in their daily efforts. Major questions were posed to the participants, including “Should the American healthcare system be federated or centralized?” and “How can we adequately fund and encourage innovation efforts?” This roundtable is the first of two; the second to be held  later this year.

New York Psychiatric Institute Suffers Breach

 
Between April 28 and May 4, 2015, the New York Psychiatric Institute suffered a cybersecurity breach that appears to affect 21,000 individuals. The New York State Office of Mental Health released an online statement that the facility was breached by unauthorized individuals. The information compromised includes names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and emails. More sensitive information including education, social security numbers and coded health information may have been breached as well. The statement indicates that officials are cooperating fully with law enforcement and have hired additional security to prevent further breaches.
