Providers Rate EHRs for Usage and Other Factors

Recently, a Medscape survey revealed what providers liked about the EHRs they use. Researchers found that the most widely used EHR is Epic, with 28 percent, and the most used in health systems, at 41 percent. On a one to five scale of various criteria, the Veterans Affairs Computerized Patient Record System came in first with a 3.65, followed closely by Epic at 3.45. In this survey, 15,000 providers participated, covering 25 specialties.

Telemedicine Could Be New Frontier for Diabetics’ Eye Exams - University of Michigan

Researchers at the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, found that telemedicine has the potential for use in diabetic eye exams. The study in Telemedicine and eHealth included 97 older adults with diabetes and found that only three percent knew of telemedicine options. Once the process was explained, 69 percent said telemedicine could be more useful than in-person exams. Those with strong relationships with optometrists were less likely to use the service. Patients with other conditions that limited mobility were more likely to acquiesce.

State Expansion of Medicaid Begets Lower Premiums - HHS

States that expanded their Medicaid programs due to the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) are currently experiencing lower premiums in the healthcare exchange insurance programs, as reported by the Department of Health and Human Services. At current estimates, rates appear to be seven percent lower for those in the lower incomes who had Medicaid as an option, compared to those that did not. This analysis is based on 2015 data that includes controls for demographics, uninsured rates, health care costs, plus other state policy decisions.

CMS to Pilot New Healthcare.gov Tool in 6 States

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced recently that they are scaling back on plans to a major update of tools on healthcare.gov. This new tool allows consumers to check ratings on individual insurance plans. The plan was announced in November of 2015 to allow consumers to check the ratings of insurers (BCBS, Cigna, etc.) on a one to five scale. Instead of a full rollout, they are now planning a pilot in six states, citing a need for additional testing of the system.

Houston Team Uses AI to Predict Breast Cancer Risk

Researchers at Houston Methodist Hospital are using artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately interpret patient charts to assist providers in predicting the risk of breast cancer in their patients. The goal is to cut down on unnecessary testing as a result of a false-positive mammogram. This new software evaluates mammograms and pathology reports 30 times faster than a human reviewer, with 99 percent accuracy. Two researchers conducted a study of 500 breast cancer patients, using software that collects diagnostic data, scans charts, and correlates mammogram results with specific breast cancer subtypes.

Support for Telemedicine Up in Texas - Study

A new survey from the Texas Association of Business (TAB) found that state employers and consumers show an increased interest in access to remote technology for communication with providers. The survey concludes  that consumers want immediate access and limited wait time. At the same time, providers seek to use technology to streamline the interactions, and employers want to offer both in their employee benefit packages. TAB surveyed 600 registered voters in Texas regarding their thoughts on telemedicine use and availability. Seventy percent favor the use of telemedicine to diagnose common healthcare issues.
