Physicians Use Workarounds Regarding EHRs

 
Four in ten providers are continuing to use workarounds for managing test results according to a research article in the Applied Clinical Informatics journal. Researchers surveyed 2,554 primary care physicians in the Department of Veterans Affairs system. Of those, 43 percent admitted that they used workarounds relating to test results management. Within the 43 percent, 70 percent said they used paper-based workarounds. The researchers found three main reasons for this, aid for memory, improve efficiency, and to facilitate care coordination.



Fertility Apps Boast Little Accuracy, Validity- Study

 

A study conducted by researchers at Georgetown University found that women aiming to get pregnant should not pull all their hopes in smartphone apps to help them. They say that the most current apps fail to use evidence-based methodology. In a study, published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, 40 apps for accuracy. In a statement, lead author Marguerite Duane, executive director of Fertility Appreciation Collaborative to Teach the Science (FACTS), "Apps offer a convenient way to track fertility biomarkers, but only some employ evidence-based fertility awareness based methods (FABMs)."



Tablet Stroke Assessments as Reliable as In-Person Efforts

 

Tablet use in tele-stroke efforts is proving to be reliable for National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale assessments according to a new study. The study, published in Neurology, reveals that tablet use for conducting NIHSS assessments was equivalent to assessments performed at bedside. This study conducted pilots in the San Francisco Bay area and central Virginia. These assessments use low-cost tablet platforms and commercial cell networks to employ bidirectional videoconferencing over 4G LTE broadband.  



Apps and Computer Games Are Gaining Acceptance as Weight Loss Tools

 

Technology-based behavioral training can impact eating decisions according to research involving an application and a computer game aimed at reducing sugary food intake and boosting weight loss. Published in ScienceDirect, the study found that utilizing computer-based inhibitory control training (ICT) and mindful decision-making training (MDT) can stem junk food intake and increase better eating decisions. The study included 119 participants using a smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment system.

ONC Intends to Use AHA Annual IT Survey Alongside CDC’s for EHR

 
According to a blog post from the Office of National Coordinator for Health IT, ONC will use the American Hospital Association annual IT survey alongside the survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to measure the rate of exchange of healthcare data. Both surveys inquire into who is utilizing, sending, receiving, finding, and integrating patient data generated by external sources. In addition, both surveys have high response rates to convey providers’ perspectives regarding exchange and interoperability. Even more of a driver for acceptance is that both of these surveys are already in the field. A way to measure interoperability was included in last year’s MACRA legislation.


House GOP Seeks to Reform Meaningful Use

 
In Speaker Paul Ryan’s response to the Patient Portability and Affordable Care Act, the GOP released A Better Way: Our Vision for a Confident America. This whitepaper consists of five main points, including a point that focuses on spurring innovation in healthcare, affects Meaningful Use Reform and EHR. The GOP explains that their plan breaks down legal and regulatory barriers hindering innovation. They go on to say that adjusting MU allows for partnerships between technologies and healthcare that puts the data in the appropriate hands.
 
Mass General Vendor Suffers data breach

 
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has been notifying patients of a data breach after discovering that one of their vendors compromised 4,300 records. The victim of this attack, Patherson Dental Supply, supplies dental practice management software for the health system’s dental practice. The breach was discovered on February 8. Data that may have been breached includes: name, birth date, and Social Security numbers.
