Researchers Develop Multimodal Wearables

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego recently developed the first multimodal wearable. The device, Chem-Phys sensor patch, monitors electrophysiology and body chemical sensing simultaneously. It can be worn on the chest and transmits to wireless devices. Researchers now hope to advance the patch even further by improving connectivity and adding more sensors for additional chemical markers, specifically potassium.

Texting Interventions Help Smokers Quit

Recent research in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) found that interventions via text messaging are effective tools to provide support and boost knowledge for those seeking to quit smoking. The study looked at research on texting and smoking cessation. However, it did not specify which messaging content works better than others. It did determine that the odds of smoking cessation were 1.37 times higher for those who utilized text messaging programs.

Virtual Endocrinologist Visits Used for Diabetic Prisoners

Recent research in Telemedicine and e-Health found that telemedicine fills a niche for treating diabetes among incarcerated populations. Researchers from SUNY Upstate Medical University conducted chart reviews of 106 male diabetic inmates, conducting telemedicine visits at 15 facilities, all located in upstate New York. In addition to these videos, they have also released a Patient Engagement Playbook for Providers to assist clinicians to better engage patients through the use of HIT. “The Playbook is part of ONC’s effort to develop more user-friendly tools that can help clinicians and other providers in sharing health information with their patients.”

Cybersecurity:

Not all Cybersecurity Breaches are Hackers

In March, a Tucson, Arizona doctor had his logbook stolen from his car with the personal health information of more than 1,000 patients. Once reported, all patients were notified. Patient details compromised included name, date of birth, age, gender, hospital name, date of visit, medical record number, a hospital number identifying the visit, and in some cases, a short description of the patient’s medical issue(s). A 2014 HHS report to Congress identified theft as the most common cause of HIPAA breaches between 2009 and 2012.
